About The Instructional Video

The FSL instructional video is complementary to the guidebook entitled "Training Materials for Effective Medication Instruction Delivery to Deaf and Hard-of-hearing Patients." It is produced to demonstrate the signs that are commonly used in conversation and during patient counseling when dispensing medications.

The entire video lasts for 13 minutes and 17 seconds covering the topics below:

Part I. Basic Filipino Sign Language Used in Conversations

• Alphabet Sign (A to Z)

• Number Sign (1 to 20, ordinal numbers)

• Time Sign

• WH Questions

• Basic Color Signs

• Greetings & Common Conversational Phrases

• Different People and Healthcare Providers

Part II. Common Medication Instructions

• Timing & Frequency of Drug Administration

• List of Side Effects Associated with Drugs

• Special Instruction for Some Medications

About These Signs

The signs, particularly on the medication instructions and side effects, are only SUGGESTED signs in order to make Deaf and Hard Of Hearing (HOH) people understand the medical terminologies without existing "standard" signs developed yet. It is understood that signs will change as they are used, so these are not expected to be the final or "standard" signs in the community. Your feedback, comments, and suggestions for the improvement of this material will be very much appreciated.

1. These are only SUGGESTED signs because of the very URGENT NEED NOW to communicate with Deaf patients. It is understood that signs will change as they are used and that there will be regional/cultural variations, so these are not expected to be the final or "standard" signs in the community. (This online platform can be a way for you to share new / emerging signs from your area or community.)

2. These signs were developed with the assistance of Deaf Sign Language consultants who are native Filipino Sign Language (FSL) users from Metro Manila, and a representative of service providers to Deaf organizations.

The Researcher and Project Head of Tulay Senyas accomplished the list of topics to be included in the instructional video and was presented to some Deaf organization leaders, medical doctors, and pharmacists in the academe for feedback. Environmental scanning was done to determine existing or non-existing signs particularly on the technical terms included such as side effects of drugs and some special instructions related to medication.

Some terms do not have single sign and therefore have to be elaborated and explained further using phrases to convey accurate message.

3. Though there may be similar signs in other countries for these vocabulary, we would like to promote use of these signs from Filipino Deaf FSL signers to the rest of the Filipino Deaf community.
